Medical Savings Account for massage therapy

Everyone likes saving money. Especially when it comes to healthcare.

Medical Savings Accounts (MSA) offer a deferred-tax advantage. These include Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRA).

If you are trying to use up this year's funds or are budgeting for next year, massage therapy costs may be eligible.

MSA can be used to pay for massage therapy treatments for the following illnesses:

  • Back Pain

  • Arthritis

  • Anxiety

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Chronic Fatigue

  • Depression

  • Diabetes

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Hypertension

  • Pain Management

  • Stress

Yes, that last one, stress, is a medical condition!

To get started, you need a prescription from your physician with these three pieces of information included:

  1. Medical necessity - why you need massage therapy (example: to relieve low back pain)

  2. Frequency - number of sessions per month (example: minimum of two sessions per month)

  3. Duration - length of treatment (example: 12 months)

Once you have this, you are ready to start getting reimbursed.

I have a client who has been successfully getting reimbursed for massage therapy to manage lower back pain. I provide an invoice after each session that describes the treatment.

EX DESCRIPTION: Massage therapy for reduction of muscular hypertonicity, pain relief, and stress management. 75 minute duration

They submit the invoice with the request for reimbursement along with their Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from their physician.

They get reimbursed.

Check the details of your plan to see if this could work for you.

Even if you don't have a medical condition listed above, massage therapy promotes well-being and is a vital part of self-care.

Make it a regular part of your healthy lifestyle.
