As we experience too
frequently, our sense
of being moves away from our centered core almost continually.
This simply happens through daily
living, interaction with our surroundings, and many things
well beyond our control. Worries about the past ("I should have
done
or
said this") and imaginings of future ("When this happens then I'll do
that") pull us away from the experience of the present moment, which is
ultimately where we live as evidenced by our physical body's real-time
functioning. Being out of center is a shift towards one or more
of our functioning components. Graphically, the sense of core
being is eclipsed by the imbalance, as illustrated in the diagrams
below.

Too Much Mental
|
||
| Work demands often cause us to
spend much of our awareness in the mental state, almost as if the body
and spirit didn't exist. The result is the head feeling separate
from the body. Massage therapy as well as other
centering techniques can restore this balance by bringing
awareness to the body and sprit, and quieting the mind. Yoga and breath-focused meditation are
also good
techniques to return toward center. |

| Too Much Physical | ||
| Too much exercise, physical labor or
pushing the body to extremes can
result in this imbalance. Rest as well as massage therapy can
move the awareness toward the more mental and spiritual realms where
the bigger
picture is explored beyond the flesh and bone. By focusing on the
less tangible aspects of being, the balance is restored. |

| Too Much Spiritual | ||
| This is the classic example of
the caregiver who is always concerned with others, but neglects the
self, always giving, giving, giving. Massage is excellent for
this person because,
by its nature, massage has to be administered by another.
This is an
important aspect of
allowing the self to be cared for and embracing the other aspects of
the
human experience beyond self-sacrifice to care for others. For those whose expression of spiritual
concern focuses on the larger scale, massage is a highly individualized
experience, bringing awareness to the infinitessimal. |

| Moving Toward Center
Through Massage Therapy |
||
|
There are many things that can
bring us
back toward center such as massage, yoga, meditation, exercise,
attention to nutrition, being in nature. Massage therapy is
excellent for this purpose because it is an all-encompassing modality
that affects mind,
body and spirit.
While there are many techniques that can move us toward center, massage is distinctive because it requires the effort and energy of another to be administered. There are times that despite our own best self-care measures, we need the help of others to draw our innate healing processes from out of ourselves. The reassurance that massage offers through touch can restore in ways that other practices cannot. Although the other centering methods mentioned here are not offered by Centered Presence, Ltd., their use is strongly encouraged, supported and, when appropriate, elements from these techniques are incorporated into the client-participation aspects of massage. Through using a highly integrative approach toward a wellness lifestyle, the recurring theme is reinforced in many ways. Personal awareness, growth and enhanced health accompanies the process. |
